In
the early days of the Malacca Sultanate era, gold dusts, pieces of
silver bars and tin blocks were transacted as a common currency exchange.
According to the Ming
Annals 1436, the
tin ingot blocks circulated in Malacca, weighted between 1 1/4 katis
(about 756 grams) and 1 1/2 katis (about 907 grams). Other forms
of common currencies transacted in Malacca were cowrie shells, mainland
Chinese copper cash, tin pitis, and gold Dinars coinage from
Sumantara.
