Shipwreck is
definitely an underwater cultural property, like other land-based
heritage and property, is part of the common heritage of humanity,
and is an integral component of human history.
UNESCO is currently preparing an international instrument aimed
at protecting this treasure of humanity and preserving it for future
generations. Shipwrecks are invaluable in reconstructing life-styles
no longer existing on land, and represent a buried treasure in terms
of knowledge: life on board, boat construction, trade routes etc.
