Many
primitive forms of money were counted, coins is one of them.
Cowrie shells were one of the widely used and traded primitive
form of money. From artefacts excavated and unearthed from
Nusantara, China, Indian Ocean and Malaysia, cowrie shells is
one of the common exchange instrument in transaction in this region.
It's not surprising that among the earliest countable metallic
"money or coins" were made of bronze or copper, in the
region of Nusantara and Malaysia, tin is commonly used in early
15th century, from Malacca Sultanate 1400-1511, to Portuguese
Period 1511-1641 and Dutch Period 1641-1795.
