Where
These Money Came From?
Country
of Origin - Ming Dynasty Shipwrecks: Royal Nanhai & Xuande, South
China Sea

The
typical characteristics of Bidor was discovered from the shipwreck
the Royal Nanhai found in the South China Sea.
Early
15th Century...found 46 meters in the deep sea,
minted
in lead and tin....weighted more than 1.2 kilo, very rare mountain
money...shape...not found in any antiques market.
A
number of pyramidal lead ingots averaging 7.5 cm in base diameter
and 4.5 cm in height. Average weight is 1511 grams
-
1670 grams. The shape, size and appearance
is identical to the Malaysian Bidor tin currency used from
the 14th-17th centuries. Similar ingots are reported from all
other Thai related shipwrecks...
The
Bidor was a widely used tin currency in Southeast Asia. The Portuguese
noted that this was a common currency in the bazaars
for
all kinds of purchases. The Dutch who later occupied Malacca,
failed to replace this currency with their own Malacca minted
copper coinage, finally agreeing to a fixed exchange rate for
the Spanish dollar with the Archinese in 1620...
This is a clear evidence of what we have
discussed and collected, whether Bidor or Malacca Sultanate
Chinese Coins, in fact, is quite commonly circulated and used
as trading currency in the region of Nusantara, since early 15th
century.
